Turning Negatives Into Positives

Tennis Player Serving On Blue Tennis Court

Fuel for the Season Ahead

A trip to the AO to support my younger brother Finn didn’t end with a walk onto court — but it may end up shaping his most important season yet.

Going in, Finn and his partner James were 4th alternates for the doubles draw at the Australian Open. With a history of late withdrawals (10 last year), there was genuine belief they’d get the call.
Day one: one team pulled out.
Day two: another.
Day three: nothing.

The disappointment hit hard — and it should. When you’re that close, you feel it.

But stepping back, this week quietly confirmed something far more important than a first-round appearance.

Just days earlier at the ASB Classic, Finn and James proved they belong at this level. A first-round win, followed by a 15–13 super tiebreak loss to the eventual finalists, showed how narrow the margins really are. A handful of points either way and the conversation changes completely — points, prize money, and a clear path into the remaining Grand Slams of 2026.

Instead of seeing this week as a setback, it’s become clarity.

They now know:

  • Their level stacks up

  • Their system works

  • Their gap to the top is small — and measurable

Yes, missing out on points and the USD $44,000 first-round doubles prize money stings. For a doubles team building a sustainable life on tour, that matters. But what matters more is knowing the work is compounding — even when the scoreboard doesn’t immediately reflect it.

Turning Disappointment into Momentum

This experience sharpens the focus moving forward:

  • Challenger events with intent, not desperation

  • Smart ATP 250 entries to accelerate ranking growth

  • A clear runway toward Roland Garros and beyond

More importantly, it reinforces the mindset that sustains long careers — continuous growth over short-term outcomes

This is the embodiment of the XPAND pillars:

  • Sweat — trusting daily effort when results lag behind

  • Knowledge — understanding where their level sits amongst the best

  • Failure — using near-misses as fuel for future events, not doubt

  • Strength of the Team — backed by family, friends and coaching support the boys have the right energy behind them.

The season ahead isn’t about what could have been.
It’s about what’s being built — point by point, week by week.

The growth continues.
