The ATP Wants to Cut Doubles. Here Is Why That Is a Mistake

Doubles has been backed into a corner. This week at Wimbledon, the ATP told leading doubles players that draw sizes and prize money will fall sharply from 2028. The proposal would cut the doubles share of prize money to 10 percent, down from 20 percent, while halving the size of doubles fields. At the biggest Masters events the draw would drop to 16 teams. At ATP 500 and 250 events it would fall to just eight. The players responded with a blunt line of their own. They said they are not a carnival sideshow, and that anyone outside the top 30 will find it impossible to make a living.

We are going to take a side here. We think the ATP has this wrong, and we think the story being told about doubles is lazy. Doubles is not a filler format. It is the most strategic, highest energy, highest risk tennis on tour, and the people playing it turn up every single day to manage a game most fans never fully see.

Why the ATP Says Doubles Has to Shrink

The ATP frames this as a sustainability problem. It says it is assessing the doubles product, draw sizes, and compensation with the aim of building a healthier long term model. It also argues that trimming doubles could lift early round singles prize money, helping more singles players cover the real cost of competing. The proposal does not touch the Grand Slams, so Wimbledon, the US Open, the Australian Open, and Roland Garros keep their 64 team draws for now.

On the surface that sounds like tidy housekeeping. Look closer and it reads differently. The players called it a plan to end doubles as a viable profession, dressed up as a cost saving measure, pushed through with almost no transparency and almost no real consultation. When the people whose careers are on the line say they were not part of the conversation, that is not a small detail. That is the whole problem.

The Audience Argument Cuts Both Ways

Yes, doubles draws smaller television audiences than singles. That is the reason given for the cuts. But the players pointed at something the ATP would rather not discuss. They blamed lackluster marketing of doubles, a failure to use broadcast and commercial partnerships, and poor event staging and promotion. In other words, doubles has not failed to find an audience. The audience has never been properly built.

Think about that for a second. You cannot starve a format of promotion for years, then point at the small crowd as proof it does not matter. That is not a market verdict. That is a self inflicted wound. If doubles is quiet, it is quiet because nobody turned up the volume.

What Doubles Actually Is

Here is the part the spreadsheet misses. Doubles is a different sport wearing the same clothes as singles. It is faster at the net, tighter in the angles, and far more punishing when you get your positioning wrong. Two players have to move as one body, read each other without speaking, and cover a court that closes in a heartbeat. The margins are smaller. The reactions are quicker. One poor step and the point is gone.

It is strategy first. Where singles can be won on raw power and legs, doubles rewards the pair that thinks half a second ahead. Formations, poaching, switching, the fake at the net, the serve placed to open a lane for a partner. This is chess played at full sprint. It is high energy from the first ball and high risk on almost every exchange, because there is nowhere to hide when two opponents are hunting the net.

And the players who do this for a living are not part timers. They train and travel and compete week after week, managing a craft that demands as much as singles and pays a fraction of it. Cutting them loose is not trimming fat. It is throwing away a discipline that took a decade to master.

The Real Problem Is the Story, Not the Format

The ATP is treating doubles like a cost. We think it is a missed story. The format is loaded with everything that makes sport worth watching. Partnership under pressure. Trust built over years. Split second decisions with real consequences. Legends teaming up, like the Williams sisters accepting a wild card at Wimbledon this year, still pulling the crowd in. That is not a sideshow. That is a headline nobody bothered to write.

So here is our solution. Do not shrink doubles. Tell it better.

Build short form content around the tactical duels, the poach that wins a set, the hand signals that decide a match. Give the great pairings a narrative arc across a season, the way every other sport builds its rivalries. Put cameras low and tight so the speed of the net exchanges actually lands on screen. Package the strategy, because the strategy is the product. Doubles does not need less room. It needs a storyteller who respects it.

The ATP still has time to change course before 2028. We hope it listens to the players. Doubles is a great story. It deserves a bigger stage, not a smaller one.
